Superfoods for Your Oral Health

Everyone knows that daily brushing and flossing helps keeps your teeth and gums healthy, but did you know there are superfoods you can eat that also improve your oral health?

When you incorporate certain foods, known as superfoods, into your diet you may start to see an improvement in your oral health. Depending upon the superfoods you consume, you could reverse early signs of tooth decay, strengthen your teeth, naturally remove bacteria or plaque from your mouth, or even whiten your teeth.

Want to improve your oral health? Start incorporating the following superfoods into your diet. Not only will you start to see improvements in your oral health, but you will start to notice changes in your overall health.

Cheese has a lot of hidden superpowers that can be used to improve your oral health. Its first major superpower is its ability to strengthen your teeth. Cheese is high in two essential nutrients – calcium and protein – that are vital to helping strengthen your teeth’s enamel. Strong enamel serves as a protective barrier against tooth sensitivity, decay, and cavities.

Other superpowers cheese has that can help improve your oral health include an ability to protect you against tooth decay by naturally increasing the pH levels in your mouth and increasing saliva production which helps reduce the amount of harmful bacteria that may be in your mouth.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens have some of the same hidden superpowers that can be found in cheese. They are high in essential minerals and nutrients that have been proven to strengthen teeth. They also contain several different types of vitamins and antioxidants which can help reverse early signs of tooth decay, help protect you against developing cavities, and possibly treat gum disease.

Some examples of leafy greens you can add to your diet if you are trying to improve your oral health include:

  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Collard greens
  • Kale

If you find it difficult to enjoy eating leafy greens, there are ways you can sneak them into your diet. Leafy greens can be subtly added to a number of your favorite snacks and drinks, such as smoothies, pizzas, and tacos.

Almost Any Type of Nut

Looking for a quick snack that will fill you up while helping you to improve your oral health? Consider grabbing a handful of nuts.

Nuts are a super snack. They contain all the important vitamins and minerals you want and need to strengthen your teeth. They also contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown in numerous studies to help improve the health of not only your teeth but your gums too.

Nuts also help to increase saliva production. Typically, nuts require a lot of chewing to be properly broken down and consumed. All the chewing you do encourages your mouth to produce more saliva than it normally would. When saliva production is increased it helps to keep your mouth clean by naturally removing plaque and bacteria.

Almost any type of nut will help you improve your oral health. The following are some of our favorite nuts that help improve oral health:

  • Almonds
  • Pistachios
  • Peanuts
  • Walnuts
  • Cashews

If you do increase your nut consumption in an effort to improve your oral health, just make sure you don’t eat too much. Nuts are extremely high in fat. Consuming too much can result in a number of health problems such as the development of heart disease or increased cholesterol levels.

Other Superfoods to Add to Your Diet

Look for foods that are high in calcium, Vitamin K2, magnesium, and Vitamin D. These vitamins and minerals help reverse tooth decay, heal your gums, and can even heal minor cavities.

Some examples of foods high in one or more of these things include:

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Egg yolks
  • Chicken liver
  • Avocado
  • Broccoli
  • Mushrooms

Eating more of these superfoods is a great way to improve your oral health. However, if you want to keep your gums, teeth, and mouth healthy you will still need to visit the dentist every three to six months for a professional cleaning and routine examination.
